Carbon-Carbon Composites

Carbon-Carbon composites are various forms of carbon fiber based preforms that are reinforced by pyrolysis and chemical vapor infiltration (CVI), using high temperature vacuum furnaces. The materials are highly resistant to heat, wear and fracture. Unlike superalloys and ceramics, they are light weight and retain their strength at high temperatures, have low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), high thermal conductivity (TC) and resist thermal shock. Applications areas include friction materials such as high performance clutches, brakes, aircraft parts and other areas requiring high strength, but light weight material. One interesting property is the self-lubrication nature of carbon-carbon composites, allowing carbon composite systems to "run dry" without external lubrication.

The Minteq Pyrogenics Group, in cooperation with Parker Hannifin Corporation, Aircraft Wheel and Brake Division, has developed a high coefficient of friction brake for the V-22 Osprey VSTOL aircraft and is finding use in other applications such as high performing auto brakes.

Please contact us concerning your specific carbon composite or CVI application and resin impregnation. We offer custom high temperature vacuum heat processing for prototypes or production toll run quantities. We have experts in CVI and CVD applications to help with your new product development or product enhancement requirement for carbon composites.
