Fire and Thermal Protection Coatings

Pyrogenics FIREX™
The Pyrogenics Group is a technological leader in the realm of specialized fire and thermal protection coatings. Pyrogenics FIREX™ coatings have provided fire and thermal protection for personnel and property for over 30 years.

FIREX™ coatings are used to "buy time" ... critical time... for the containment and suppression of thermal threats to personnel, equipment, and structures. The coatings are also used to protect surfaces exposed to high thermal flux and aerodynamic shear. By intumescence or ablation. FIREX™ coatings absorb and reject thermal energy in a controlled and predictable manner.

FIREX™ coatings are used in numerous military and defense applications, including ships, tanks, military vehicles, shelters, aircraft, and space vehicles.

In addition, we have teamed with the  U.S. Army’s Aviation and Missile Research, Development, and Engineering Center (AMRDEC) to provide predictive modeling of applications based on our FIREX™ products which provide excellent test correlations. We can model the expected behavior of your application with our products and generate results to help guide your material selection process.

FIREX™ RX-2373
FIREX™ RX-2373 is modified epoxy binder filled with thermally active materials that form cooling gases when exposed to temperatures in excess of 350°F (177 °C).  When heat in the range of 1000 to 5000° F (538 to 2760°C) is applied, a char forms which insulates by transpirational cooling and re-radiation. In addition, filler materials more efficiently control the release of gaseous molecular species.

After partial use, the char is brushed away and the FIREX™ RX-2373 re-useable or refurbished with additional material. Adhesion to metals, wood, paper, and glass is excellent; it readily accepts a top coat.

FIREX™ RX-2373 is furnished solvent-free as "A" and "B" components with a shelf life of six months. When thoroughly mixed, the material is applied by spreading or troweling and by injection mold. Pot life and cure time is adjustable for a variety of applications by the addition of small amounts of solvent. RX-2373 cures at room temperature with a final density of 0.045 lb/in3 (1.245 g/cc).

FIREX™ RX-2390
FIREX™ RX-2390 is modified epoxy binder filled with thermally active materials that form cooling gases when exposed to temperatures in excess of 350° F (177 °C). Then heat in the approximate range of 1000 to 5000° F (538 to 2760°C) is applied, a char forms which insulates by transpirational cooling and re-radiation.

FIREX™ RX-2390 is a two-part epoxy resin system. It is produced in sprayable and trowelable versions, with a shelf life of six months, as well as precured panels, this material is  used on vertical surfaces without sagging or slumping. Coating thickness up to 60 mils (15 µm) can be applied in a single pass. RX-2390 cures at room temperature, with a final density 0.045 lb/in3 (1.245 g/cc).

FIREX™ RX-2376
FIREX™ RX-2376 is a polyurethane based coating containing active fillers that form a liquid film at temperatures of 250° F (121 °C) or higher. Under conditions of aerodynamic heating, this film is swept away by the air stream without affecting airfoil characteristics and electrical transmission. As long as unreacted material remains, the substrate temperature will remain at approximately 250° F (121 °C).

Application of FIREX™ RX-2376
FIREX™ RX-2376 is a two component liquid system that is mixed in the ration of 100 parts component A to 172.5 parts component B. Pot life is approximately one hour at room temperature. Application of the material is done with conventional suction type paint spray equipment after mixing. Application of the material is universal on all surfaces but horizontal orientation maximizes uniformity and a smooth surface coating.

A maximum thickness of twenty to thirty mils can be applied at one time. For applications requiring thicker coatings, twenty to thirty mils should be applied per pass and a six hour drying time allowed between passes. Cure time is twenty-four hours. Cured materials remain stable at temperatures from -65° F to + 200° F (- 54 to + 121°C).

FIREX™ RX-2376 has a limited shelf life characteristic of many polyurethane based materials. As long as the containers are kept tightly sealed, shelf life is at minimum 30 days at ambient temperature and as long as 90 days under refrigeration.
